The BBC has reported this story about a 13 year old who gave up his iPod for an original Sony Walkman for a week, just for a little sociological experiment. One of the funniest parts has to be the fact it took him 3 days just to find out that the tape had another side! Oh kids today, they don’t know they were born.

However it wasn’t all bad. The original Walkman did have two sockets so you could share your listening experience with a friend. You have to buy an adapter with today’s iPods. Who said brands have only just started being social.

Here’s my first. Very big and very yellow huh

Details emerge for iPhone OS 3.0

by Brady on March 18, 2009

image Yesterday, Apple released details about the upcoming iPhone OS 3.0 which adds a bunch of new things iPhone owners have been asking for… but leaves a few out.

The next version of the OS, which will arrive mid-year will offer developers “over 1000 new APIs” to work with.

Highlights of the feature-set include:

  • Cut, Copy and Paste! – and about time too.
  • MMS! – Quite frankly the lack of MMS was embarrassing to me and a source of amusement for those around me.
  • In-App purchasing – A cool idea, but a way for iPhone app developers to potentially nickel-and-dime us to death.
  • Peer-to-Peer connectivity – LAN games? Sweet.
  • Push notifications – Developers will be able to build message, sound and badge alerts into their apps.
  • Landscape keyboard available everywhere – Write texts and emails with a larger keyboard.
  • Voice memos – No need to buy a separate app for this now.
  • System-wide search – Easily find things in your messages, notes, mail and media files.

Sadly, the capability for applications to run in the background and (official) video recording using the camera is still out.

TUAW.com have a feature round-up here.

Apple have also released a video of the full presentation here.

The Simpsons have been around as long as I can remember happy television and I was always, I am and I will be a fan of them.

they have never been shy of making fun of everything and in a new episode it was Apples turn.

I was sitting there watching it with a massive grin in my face.

check it out: (the Youtube ones got taken off :-( )

but I found one here.

Charge your ipod (or iphone) using an onion

by amnesia on November 27, 2008

I love this. You can charge your ipod or iphone 3G using an onion! I’ve seen it before, but doubted it was possible. Yee of little faith. At the weekend I ran out of juice while I was out and about so had to resort to A-Team methods. Using an onion, an energy drink and my normal ipod charger I was able to get about 1 hour’s charge from my little many-layered friend. Here’s how you do it:

Stay tuned for the Amnesia onion challenge and see who gets the most power from a single vegetable. Whoever knew an apple and an onion would go so well together ;) AP

Is the iPhone getting Flash?

by Brady on October 2, 2008

image That’s the rumor!

Apparantly when the iPhone launched, Mr Jobs wasn’t happy with the performance on the iPhone’s ARM11 processors. Neither was he happy with the feature set of Flash Lite. What he wanted was “something in the middle”.

Adobe listened and this week at the Flash On The Beach conference, Adobe confirmed that an iPhone version of the Flash player is in development.

It’s not known when or even if the application will see the the light of day as Apple most likely in control of the release.

Hopefully Steve will like what he sees and we’ll see something soon.

Well, it’s here.

Haven’t had time to read the avalanche of press about this thing, but I did really enjoy this promo for it.

Methinks T-Mobile is having a bit of fun at Apple’s expense. For what it’s worth I don’t think ‘funnest’ is a real word either.

The Most Realistic Unboxing of All Time

by Brady on September 16, 2008

Oh, man this made me laugh.

I’d say our Surface tables were easier to open than this and we needed a crowbar.

Bad news if you were saving up the $999.99 to buy Armin Heinrich’s “I Am Rich” iPhone Application as Apple have decided to remove it from their App Store.

image

Features:

  • - A shiny red gem in the middle of the screen

From the application’s description page:

The red icon on your iPhone or iPod touch always reminds you (and others when you show it to them) that you were rich enough to afford this… It’s a work of art with no hidden function at all.

Enterprising bugger is Mr Heinrich. Rumour is he sold a few of these before it vanished.

The images below may be the single reason I don’t buy a 3G iPhone and stick with my Nokia N95 for a little while longer.

Now I should say that I think the N95 and iPhone 3G are both very good phones. Many Amnesia staff have iPhones, but I’m yet to be drawn in despite beeing a total geek and gadget freak. Why? Now, forget the vastly superior iPhone interface and screen for a second, because they both have similar features (3G, GPS, wireless, accelerometer, + tons of apps for both).

The big problem with the iPhone is the camera. It’s a 2 megapixel camera with no flash, compared with the N95 5 megapixel cam with Carl Zeiss lens. These shots below are taken outside the Amnesia office from exactly the same position with good light.

Nokia 95 – Note the much greater field of view than the iPhone.

Now let’s Zoom in on the detail:

Nokia N95 Sample image
Above is a zoom from the N95 shot. It’s at the point where clearly the compression starts to become noticable, but you can read the street sign. There is detail in the shutters at the side and the red alarm bell on the right is distinguishable.

iPhone 3G sample image zoom detail
Above is the iPhone 3G. The detail is completely gone at the same zoom level. Not a single letter can be made out on the signpost.

Finally let’s look at the red car the red BMW. Well on the iPhone you can’t even see what brand of car it is, let alone read the numberplate. Good job this isn’t a crime scene.

The iPhone 3G camera in low light is a lot worse – and it’s not an easy camera to hold still whilst you press the button… so pictures in the pub get very smudgy. Admittedly the Nokia N95 flash is pretty ordinary but better than nothing.

So if you want a single device – camera and phone like me, and you want OK shots that you could print later, then the iPhone 3G has a long way to go. The N95 wins by a mile.
